We believe that our responsibility for the children in our community begins at birth and continues throughout their life. We therefore aim to ensure that transitions between Key Stages are as smooth as possible.
Our aim is for all Year 2 children to feel confident, secure and excited about the move to our Junior School.
Year 3 teachers and teaching assistants spend time in class getting to know the Year 2 children and their parents at the Infant School during the Summer Term. During 'Transition Week' the Year 2 children also spend a couple of days at our school, with their teachers and parents, familiarising themselves with the building and our staff.
Year 2 parents are invited to attend regular 'Information Evenings' where they have the opportunity to ask questions and get to know us, and also receive our school newsletters towards the end of the summer term.
Most of our Y3 children come to us from Halfway Nursery Infant School and our two schools work closely together to make this a seamless transition. To look at our joint transition plan please see the document at the bottom of this page.
Children coming to us from other settings are equally supported in their transition, with staff liasing closely to make sure that every child feels settled, happy and ready to learn.
We have links with our 'feeder' school, Westfield Sports College, and also other secondary schools in the local area. Teachers from those schools visit our Year 6 children in the summer term, to get to know them and gather information about their needs and abilities from the teachers.
As part of our work with the Westfield Family of Schools we are actively involved in developing an even better transition programme for 2015/16. Staff from the school are supporting and participating in a family of schools working group to develop this aspect of transition to make it as seamless as possible for children and families.
Towards the end of the summer term, Year 6 children spend up to two weeks at their chosen secondary school, meeting their new teachers and familiarising themselves with the school and timetable. At Westfield Sports College, they take part in a Sports Day, which their Year 6 teachers attend. All secondary schools in our area hold regular open evenings for parents.
We also offer more 'bespoke' transition programmes to help some children feel ready for the move to their new school. We strongly encourage parents to drop in to see us if they would like to discuss how we can personalise transition arrangements to suit the needs of your child.
