Core Subject Areas

Reading, Writing and Maths

The core subject areas are taught daily with the subjects broken into fundamental areas, such as transcription and composition in writing, comprehension, decoding and prosidy in reading, and fluency, numerosity, conceptual understanding and problem solving in maths. High priority is placed on sequencing learning, ensuring there is focus placed on understanding and exploration of key ideas. Sequences are structured into a series of milestones, ensuring learning takes place and pupils have ample opportunity to practice and apply learning. Pupils explore and investigate key ideas, before learning new knowledge and then finally learning to apply knowledge to unfamiliar, complex and high order tasks. Basic skills are fundamental to the approach across these subjects, where reveisting and embedding of core knowledge supports access and success across the curriculum. 

Several strategies make up our core subject provision. Oracy and vocabulary development underpin learning across the curriculum, however, there are specfic elements which are taught explicitly within our core areas.

Science

Science has a high profile within school, where curiosity is fostered, and children engage in explorations of the world around them. Science provides a fantastic basis in which to develop reasoning, critical thinking, make predictions and interact meaningfully with their knowledge of the world, whilst finding out more and more about ourselves and the phenomenon around us. Science is taught weekly through single discipline lessons, which serve to provide knowledge, disciplinary and procedural skills, conceptual understanding and exciting experiences.
