Curriculum Organisation

Curriculum Intent

The curriculum at Halfway Juniors is designed to engage children in a culture of knowledge and love for learning. Our curriculum, organised as a cycle of intensive drive areas, promotes a deep and enriching exploration of subject knowledge and disciplinary skills, in order to interact with and respond to curriculum content. Our curriculum is fully inclusive, with a high emphasis on promoting thinking; our ability to assess, consider and organise knowledge before responding to enquiries, problems and solutions. To support growth, our curriculum ensures the child is at the centre of our approach, developing important skills and attributes, such as robustness, critical thinking, debate, reflection, analysis, creative problem solving, independence and more. Our aim is to ensure our pupils have the academic, cultural, and  global knowledge, alongside the skills to be successful inside the classroom and out.

Reading, Writing and Maths

The core subject areas are taught daily with the subjects broken into fundamental areas, such as transcription and composition in writing, comprehension, decoding and prosidy in reading, and fluency, numerosity, conceptual understanding and problem solving in maths. High priority is placed on sequencing learning, ensuring there is focus placed on understanding and exploration of key ideas. Sequences are structured into a series of milestones, ensuring learning takes place and pupils have ample opportunity to practice and apply learning. Pupils explore and investigate key ideas, before learning new knowledge and then finally learning to apply knowledge to unfamiliar, complex and high order tasks. Basic skills are fundamental to the approach across these subjects, where reveisting and embedding of core knowledge supports access and success across the curriculum. Please find the curriculum documents for our core area, including science, at the bottom of this page.

Wider Curriculum

The wider curriculum is organised into two distict layers depending on the nature of the subjects. Our driver Subjects, History, DT, Art and Geography form an intensive exploration leading a whole term. The whole school aproach provides opportunity for further enrichmrnts and opportunities across the year groups creating a deep and engageing learning experience,

Some subjects are taught discretely, ensuring quality and sequential content delivery taught weekly over the year.
