Admissions

We always welcome visits to our school as we believe this is the only way for you and your children to get a really good feel for our school and all that we stand for. Please call the school office should you wish to arrange a visit and come and meet us.

Sheffield City Council take care of the admission arrangements. For further information visit their website or call the admissions team on 0114 273 5766.

School Transitions

Our children undertake two main transitions whilst they are with us: transitioning from year 2 to year 3 and year 6 to year 7.

To make these transitions a success, we work closely with our local schools to ensure our children are fully supported during their move.

Year 2 to Year 3

The aim of our Y2 - Y3 transition is to ensure that pupils and families have the opportunity to get to know our school, staff and routines before they join us in September.

The start of the transition process begins in November with a school open evening, where prospective families are invited to come and look round the school.

Once school places have been assigned, letters are sent out to new families in the Summer term outlining the key transition dates for the year. Alongside this, families receive our school welcome pack which contains key information about the school as well as important forms to complete and return back to us.

A further meeting is then held in June to discuss the practical elements of moving to the Junior school and go through the information in the welcome pack. New class teachers and class rooms are then shared either at this meeting or later in the term via a letter. The Y3 teachers then spend some time in the Y2 classes getting to know the children and meeting the parents before our transition day.

The transition day coincides with our Y6 - Y7 transition day and is a chance for pupils and families to experience a day at the Junior school. Y2 children spend the full day at the Junior school with their Y3 teacher.

Running underneath all of this is a robust handover plan between teachers, SENCOs and safeguarding leads to ensure that pupils and families are able to have a positive and successful start at the Junior school in September.

Additional transition

Some children may require further and additional transition. School will contact these families separately to arrange this.

Year 6 to Year 7

We know that the transition from Primary school to Secondary school can be filled with worry and anxiety, as well as excitement and curiosity.

The majority of our children chose to continue their education at Westfield Secondary School and we are proud to be part of the Westfield Family of Schools. Some of our students also chose to move onto Eckington Secondary School or even further afield. Wherever they chose to continue their education, we make sure that we work in close partnership with these schools.

During the Summer term, staff from Halfway Junior School meet with staff from the Secondary schools to discuss each child who is moving to the new school. Class teachers, SENCOs and safeguarding leads are involved in this process to ensure that a full picture of each child is shared, so that their move into year 7 can be a seamless one.

All secondary schools in our area hold regular open evenings for parents and have a full transition package which we fully support. We share details of open evenings and transition days on our school newsletters.
